What it is

Spitting Cave is a dramatic natural landmark located on the rugged southeastern coast of Oʻahu, in the residential Portlock neighborhood of Hawaiʻi Kai. It is characterized by towering basalt cliffs, remnants of ancient lava flows, where powerful Pacific Ocean waves crash into underwater lava tubes. This creates a unique phenomenon where water is forcefully "spit" back out through the cave's opening, sometimes spraying up to 20 feet high, earning the spot its descriptive name. Spitting Cave is located in a high-end residential area of Portlock, Hawaiʻi Kai.

  • Access: Finding the cave can be tricky as there are no large signs. It's typically accessed via a discreet public access path or alleyway marked "119A" between two houses at the end of Lumahai Street. The path down to the cliffs is short (approximately 0.2 miles), but it is steep, uneven, rugged, and can be slippery or muddy, especially after rain. Sturdy closed-toe footwear is highly recommended over flip-flops.
  • Parking: There is no designated parking lot. Visitors can park along Lumahai Street, but must be respectful of the residential neighborhood, observe local parking laws (e.g., not blocking driveways or hydrants), and avoid crowding access points.
  • Timing: The location is generally accessible during daylight hours, and visiting in the late afternoon or for sunset is often recommended for dramatic lighting and photography. Safety and cautions

Spitting Cave is considered a highly dangerous location, primarily due to unpredictable and powerful ocean conditions.

  • Ocean Hazards: The ocean at Spitting Cave is deep, powerful, and unpredictable. Strong waves, rip currents, and the force of water entering and exiting the cave make swimming or cliff jumping extremely hazardous and strongly discouraged. Multiple fatalities and serious injuries have occurred here, prompting state officials and local residents to issue strong warnings. In one recent year, the Honolulu Fire Department responded to four incidents at Spitting Caves, with two incidents reported as of May 1st the following year, including a drowning. Lifeguards are not typically present, meaning rescue efforts can be delayed.
  • Cliff and Trail Hazards: The cliffs are steep, and the access path can be uneven, wet, and slippery. Visitors must stay a safe distance back from the cliff edges, especially during high surf, as waves can wash over the rocks. Sturdy, closed-toe footwear is essential.
  • Environmental/Cultural Sensitivity: The site is located within a residential neighborhood. Visitors must be respectful of residents by parking legally, avoiding noise, and not littering. There is limited shade, so sun protection (sunscreen, hat, water) is advisable.

However, it is absolutely not a destination for swimming, snorkeling, or cliff jumping. The inherent dangers of the powerful ocean currents and cliff conditions are extreme, and visitors should heed all warnings against entering the water. Families with small children or individuals with mobility issues may find the steep, uneven access path challenging and should consider if the reward outweighs the risk.

Do not confuse "Spitting Cave" with "China Walls," which is a similar but distinct cliff area located nearby, also known for dangerous ocean conditions and cliff jumping. While both offer dramatic views, Spitting Cave specifically refers to the cave that expels water.
